East Lyme residents approve purchase of Bayreuther property

East Lyme — By a majority vote, residents on Wednesday approved purchasing the roughly 40-acre Bayreuther property in the Oswegatchie Hills.

The town will appropriate $280,000 for the purchase of the land on Quarry Dock Road but will end up paying $25,000 after reimbursements. A private foundation, The Thompson Family Foundation, will contribute $150,000, and the state will contribute $100,000.

The Friends of the Oswegatchie Hills, a nonprofit organization, will pay the remaining cost.

About 30 residents attended the meeting and also approved by majority vote to appropriate $20,000 from a state grant for an archaeological survey of the Samuel Smith property on Plants Dam Road.

The grant is from the State Historic Preservation Office under the Department of Economic and Community Development.
