State's Attorney said trooper justified in shooting Waterford man

New London County State’s attorney Michael Regan ruled this week that State Trooper Bryan Fahey took appropriate action when he shot and wounded a 44-year-old Waterford man after the man rammed several police cruisers in an attempt to escape custody.

Fahey, assigned to Troop E in Montville, shot Keith Corey of Waterford on Jan. 11 following a chase that started in Plainfield and ended in Lisbon. Police had followed Corey onto Interstate 395 where they had boxed him in. Corey, police said, had a female occupant in his car when he swerved and hit one cruiser and spun off the highway.

Troopers surrounded Corey’s car and were getting out of their vehicles when Corey started driving forward and in reverse, hitting two cruisers. Fahey, who was out of his vehicle, warned Corey he would shoot and eventually shot once, according to the Nov. 20 report issued by Regan.

Corey was hit in the leg and suffered an injury that was not life-threatening. A report from the hospital showed his blood alcohol level was .175 — twice the legal limit. His license was also suspended at the time.

Corey has since been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and five counts each of attempted first-degree assault and first-degree reckless endangerment, among other charges.

The case was investigated by detectives with the Central District Major Crime Squad and inspectors from the New London County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Corey remains held in lieu of a $150,000 bond. His case is pending in New London Superior Court.
