    High school roundup: New London girls post impressive 2-1 soccer win over NFA

    New London — New London High School's Olivia Santana converted a direct kick on a blistering 40-yard shot in the 57th minute, breaking a 1-1 tie and lifting the Whalers to a 2-1 girls' soccer victory over Norwich Free Academy on Monday.

    The Whalers (2-0) had taken a 1-0 lead in the first half on an unassisted goal by Mia Santana before the Wildcats tied it on a penalty kick by Mae Phipps with 11:31 remaining in the opening half.

    Kenya Capers stopped six shots in goal for New London, which was outshot 7-4.

    Boys' soccer

    • Josh Ries scored two goals and Sean McBride had three assists in Norwich Tech's 5-0 win over Vinal Tech in the Constitution State Conference. Jake Montimy, Chad Holmes and Evan Socha added goals for the Warriors (2-0), who scored all five goals in the first half.

    • Chris Rocca's goal with a minute remaining in the second overtime gave Tourtellotte a 1-0 victory over St. Bernard in the Eastern Connecticut Conference Small Division. Goalie Juan Uran made 13 saves for the Saints (1-1, 0-1).

    • Nick Ghirardi and James Foster scored three goals apiece as East Lyme rolled to a 9-0 victory over Fitch in the ECC Large Division. The Vikings (1-0, 1-0) held a 16-6 edge in shots. Fitch is 0-2, 0-1.

    • Matt Sylvestre had a goal and an assist, leading NFA past New London 5-0. Alex Jacobik, Bryce Capunitan, Santiago Manrique and Nathan Cherenzia also scored for the Wildcats (1-0). Troy Maurer and Seth Strader combined for three saves to earn a shutout.

    • Waterford fell in a 3-1 hole by halftime and never recovered, losing to Bacon Academy 4-2. Dan Castelpoggi and Colin Shannon each had a goal while Stephen Lavoie added an assist for the Lancers (1-1). L.J. Luster had two goals for the Bobcats.

    • Jake Dalashmutt scored twice and Jack Gelhuas had two assists as Woodstock Academy beat Stonington 3-1. Blake Edwards scored and Cam Whelan had the assist for Stonington (1-1).

    • Kyle Apicelli scored two goals and Alex Ganoe and Lucas Chaude each added one in Montville's 4-0 win over Ledyard. Ethan Rose had two assists and goalie Nik Strickland made three saves to earn the shutout for the Indians (2-0). The Colonels are 0-2.

    Volleyball

    • Mae Sefransky had 24 assists and Mackenzie Aldridge added six kills and 10 digs as Fitch beat Montville, 25-11, 25-15, 26-24. Jen Severino had 10 kills and four aces for Fitch (3-0). Olivia Fargo had 17 digs and five aces, Hailey Edwards 11 digs and Kristi Petrova three kills for Montville (0-2).

    • Vanessa Kobyluck had 37 assists to help lift Waterford to a 25-20, 25-21, 25-15 victory over East Lyme. Mikayla Tourjee added 16 kills and Jillian Sykora nine service points and 17 digs for the Lancers (2-0) while Madison Bell had 21 digs and Alexis Bell 27 assists for the East Lyme (1-1).

    • Bacon rolled to a 25-13, 25-21 and 25-23 victory over Ledyard. Jenna Boyd had eight kills and three aces for the Colonels (0-2) and Bethanie Deveau had 11 assists. Olivia McKenzie had 14 kills and Jillian Reynolds 18 assists for Bacon (2-0).

    • Lexi Galluci had 20 assists and four aces to highlight Wheeler's 25-22, 25-19 and 25-15 win over Grasso Tech. Maddie Porter added seven kills and four blocks for the Lions while Alysia Rathbun had nine kills, six aces and 12 digs and Chrissy McSwain had seven kills and eight digs. Keila Lastraglio led Grasso with seven digs and nine service points while Patience Hamilton had eight digs, Kierra Sebastian seven assists and Magda Martinez six kills.

    • Goodwin Tech rallied after the losing the first game to defeat Norwich Tech 10-25, 25-23, 25-20 and 28-26 in the CSC. Saige Laquitara led the Warriors (1-1) with 13 service points and eight aces while Courtney Majewski added 19 service points and five aces.

    Field hockey

    • Cara Bradley scored four goals as East Lyme cruised to a 6-0 victory over Waterford in the ECC. Kaihley Rafferty added one goal and one assist for the Vikings (2-0, 2-0) while Lauren Abbey also scored a goal and Elena Hynes and Hannah LeBeau each had assists. Goalie Bekah Sanders stopped 15 shots for Waterford (1-1, 1-1).

    Cross country

    • Norwich Tech's Cody Kersteter and Troy Anderson finished 1-2 to lead the Warriors to an 18-45 win over Grasso Tech in the CSC. Kersteter won in 21 minutes in the season opener for both while Kariath Wiggins placed third for Grasso. Only three runners competed in the girls' race with Norwich Tech's Ashley Roch winning in 31:15.
