New London police announce plans for hosting Trump at CGA graduation

New London — City police have announced parking bans, traffic restrictions and public assembly restrictions that will be put in place Wednesday for the U.S. Coast Guard Academy graduation that will feature President Donald Trump as keynote speaker.

No parking will be allowed beginning at 5 a.m. Wednesday on River Ridge Road, Deshon Street, Nameaug Avenue, Oneco Avenue, Farnsworth Street, Winchester Road and Uncas Avenue. Signs will be posted. The restrictions will remain in effect until late in the day, at the police department’s discretion. Parking tickets will be issued and vehicles towed.

Riverside Park will be closed to the public beginning at 5 a.m. Wednesday until later in the day, at the police department’s discretion.

The public will be allowed to assemble at the following locations: McKinley Park at the corner of Williams Street and Crystal Avenue, the grass parcel on Williams Street near the Williams and Bridge streets overpass, and at the small grass parcel across the street from the Coast Guard Academy main gate.

No assembly will be allowed past the main gate from that area, and no assembly will be allowed inside the main gate by anyone holding tickets or with authorized access to the campus during the graduation ceremony.

Police Captain Brian M. Wright said security barricades will be erected along the front of the academy in areas not yet defined. Wright asked that people respect the barricades and instructions of security personnel on duty Wednesday.

“We’re going to do everything we can to accommodate people’s right to assemble,” Wright said Saturday.

Police also announced that, for safety and security reasons, no masks or face-covering items of any sort may be worn during public gatherings Wednesday and no signs utilizing sticks or posts, no backpacks, no bags and no amplified noise devices will be allowed unless a permit is on file with New London police for that event, and no sticks or posts will be allowed.

For more information on the restrictions, contact the New London Police Department at (860) 447-5269.
