State police see large increase in crashes over New Year's weekend

State police handed out more than 1,400 tickets and responded to almost 500 wrecks over the holiday weekend — far more crashes than during last year’s New Year’s weekend.

The more than 200-crash increase over last year likely was aided by Saturday’s snowfall. According to police, 54 of the crashes resulted in injuries and two — one in Trumbull and another in Glastonbury — were fatal.

Of the tickets troopers gave out, 611 were for speeding and 20 were for seatbelt violations. Police additionally arrested 28 intoxicated drivers.

In total, police responded to 6,885 calls for service from Friday morning through Monday night.

Over the same weekend last year, police were called to 276 crashes and gave out 1,800 tickets.
