    Charter Oak tops in local mortgage loans

    For the eighth consecutive year, Charter Oak Federal Credit Union has been named the top producer of residential mortgage loans in eastern Connecticut.

    Last year, the Waterford-based credit union reported originating 999 residential mortgages in New London and Windham counties with a total value of more than $126 million. The mortgage total was nearly double its closest competitor in the region, according to statistics compiled by The Warren Group, publisher of The Commercial Record.

    Since 2010, Charter Oak has originated more than 9,800 residential mortgages in New London and Windham counties.

    Total value of those loans have topped $1.2 billion, according to a release.

    “It’s a real honor for Charter Oak to be eastern Connecticut’s top mortgage lender for eight straight years,” said Brian A. Orenstein, Charter Oak’s president and chief executive.

    In New London County, Charter Oak topped all competitors with 799 mortgage originations surpassing $100 million in value. It also was tops in Windham County with 200 originations totaling more than $20 million.
