Thousands of young musicians are constantly asking my advice — mostly because they're smart enough to do the exact opposite of whatever I tell them.

For example, I'd recommend that no good can come from the idea of re-doing smash hits by other artists. Then along came shows like "American Idol" and "The Voice," where the idea is to make giant stars out of artists who ONLY cover other musicians.

But maybe it can work both ways. Consider Jesse Kinch, who, by the way, performs as our guest today on The Day's "Live Lunch Break" session in New London at the Telegraph Records Shop. In 2014, Kinch won first place on CBS' "Rising Star" talent competition, judged by Brad Paisley, Kesha and Ludacris. Kinch blew through the contest with witty, creative versions of tunes by the Allman Brothers, Michael Jackson, The Who, Screamin' Jay Hawkins and more.

As a result, Kinch signed with the prestigious Curb Records, and his debut album is due any day. It's a pretty cool honor that he'll be on LLB — and it'll be a great opp for folks to see and hear his own material.
