Local roundup: NFA softball knocks off No. 2 Southington

Norwich — Bailey Comeau pitched a three-hitter as Norwich Free Academy beat Southington 2-0 on Sunday in a nonleague softball game.

Southington (10-1) is ranked second in the GameTimeCT/New Haven Register state poll and is a perennial Class LL power.

"Our defense is the best it's been in my time as coach,'' said 10th-year NFA coach Bryan Burdick. "We've been playing some tremendous defense and on top of that we're a pretty darned good offensive team.''

And the defense got things going for NFA (10-4) in the top of the first inning.

Southington's speedy Sarah Myrick reached on a one-out walk then stole second. The next batter hit a grounder to second baseman Hailee Schrader, who threw to first baseman Brooke Gottshall just in time for the out. Myrick never stopped, heading home, but Gottshall's throw to catcher Shea Gendron was in time to get Myrick at the plate.

Southington didn't get a runner past second the rest of the game.

NFA reached Southington pitcher Kara Zazzaro for a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. Gendron led off with a double and moved to third base on a bunt single by Schrader. Zazzaro struck out the next two batters, but Alex Burdick got NFA on the board with an RBI single that moved Schrader to second. Schrader went to third on Comeau's single and scored on a wild pitch.

Comeau (9-3) struck out five and walked four.

"I think when Bailey is on and locked in, she's as dominant as anybody in the league,'' said Burdick.

Schrader and Comeau had two hits each for NFA.
