Jonquel Jones arrives at Sun training camp

Stand down from orange alert, Connecticut Sun fans — All-Star post Jonquel Jones has finally arrived at training camp.

Jones, a cornerstone to Connecticut’s success last season, had been attending to a family matter at home in the Bahamas. Sun head coach Curt Miller texted Thursday night that she's expected to play in their WNBA season-opener at home Sunday against the Las Vegas Aces.

Jones, a 6-foot-6 center, blossomed into one of the league’s best players last season in just her second year. She set a WNBA single-season record for rebounds (403) and wowed both fans and her peers with a game-high 24 points and nine rebounds at the all-star game.

Jones led Connecticut in scoring (15.4) and earned second-team All-WNBA honors. She was also fifth in the MVP voting.

Las Vegas, the former San Antonio Stars, will start the season without four of its top players. Guards Kayla McBride, the team’s top scorer last year, and Kelsey Plum are playing in the decisive third game of the Turkish Women’s Basketball League on Saturday. Center Isabelle Harrison, the second-leading scorer last year, announced in late April that she was taking a leave of absence due to personal medical reasons.
