H.S. roundup: Stonington advances to Class S girls' tennis final

Stonington — Stonington High School's girls' tennis team was pretty quiet following a few of its matches earlier in the tournament. On Wednesday, Stonington coach George Crouse noticed a different reaction.

Stonington, the No. 2 seed in the Class S state tournament, defeated No. 14 Northwest Catholic 7-0 in the semifinals to reach Thursday's championship match against old foe Weston, the No. 8 seed. That match will be held at 3 p.m. at Amity Regional High School in Woodbridge.

"They were slapping hands," Crouse said of his athletes. "It's a pretty quiet bunch, but they were talking to each other after. Today they were (excited)."

Gabby Dellacono won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles and the doubles teams of Margot Goodman-Ainsley Johnstone, Phoebe Townsend-Brielle Fratoni-Jaskiewicz and Holly Foster-Cassie Onorato only dropped one game between them. Charlotte Johnstone, Makenzie Sadler and Hannah Middleton also won singles matches.

Stonington (18-1) will be playing in its 10th final, eight against Weston. The Bears lost to Weston in the semifinals the last two seasons, falling 6-1 in 2016 and 4-3 in 2017. Weston, with 12 titles, is the two-time defending Class S champ.

Stonington beat Weston 4-3 for the 2013 championship.

"The team that wins is going to have to play well and that could be either team," Crouse said. "You're not going to find too many weaknesses on our team and theirs either. ... This is one of the best teams ever at Stonington, win or lose."

Weston defeated No. 4 Shepaug 6-1 in Wednesday's other semifinal.
