Fire at Seconn Fabrication contained to powder coating oven

Waterford — A fire in a powder coating oven filled the Seconn Fabrication warehouse with smoke Sunday afternoon but didn’t spread beyond the machine, Cohanzie fire Chief Todd Branche said.

Crews went to the 180 Cross Road facility around 2:40 p.m. and found a fire in the 10- by-20-foot oven. It isn’t yet clear what caused the blaze, but Branche said the oven’s doors weren’t fully shut.

Firefighters peeled back the doors just enough to extinguish the flames, then ventilated the building. No one was injured in the blaze, which saw a response from all of Waterford’s fire companies as well as the New London Fire Department and Lawrence + Memorial Hospital medics.

The fire was just one of nine calls Cohanzie firefighters handled Sunday. They also put out a car fire near Sears in the Crystal Mall parking lot, helped clear up a car-versus-deer crash and took on various medical issues.

An average day would have three or four calls.

Branche said 12 volunteers helped his company handle the load. He also commended two junior members who, while they aren’t qualified to fight fires, helped on the outside by readying hydrants, stretching hoses and grabbing tools.

“Everybody did a good job,” Branche said.
