Groton Bank Day highlights local history, Revolutionary times

In celebration of Connecticut Open House Day, the City of Groton will hold its first annual Groton Bank Day this Saturday, and with it will come a bevy of opportunities to explore Groton’s unique Revolutionary War history, its art and its local lore.

On the forefront of the festivities will be the theme of history, with the Avery-Copp House on Thames Street, as well as The Ebenezer Avery House on Fort Street, open for guided tours. Take a step back into Revolutionary times as kitchen and sewing demonstrations take place. A chance to visit a Revolutionary War soldier will be up for grabs, along with historical children’s games and needlework crafts.

Walk up the hill and check out Fort Griswold Battlefield State Park’s Monument House Museum, or climb an additional 166 steps to see sweeping views of Groton and New London from the windows of the Groton Monument.

Coinciding with the event will be Groton’s 9th annual Art on Groton Bank, an outdoor art festival on the steps of Monument Street’s Bill Memorial Library. Music and food will offer visitors a respite from a day of sightseeing.

Other notable places to check out include the Mother Bailey House and the Groton Congregational Church. The former will offer a rare glimpse inside an historic structure not typically open to the public, and the latter will showcase its stained-glass windows.

And for a joy ride over the river, enjoy Heritage River Park’s river taxi, which will be operating free of charge from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

A free shuttle bus will also be in operation throughout the day, transporting Bank Day-goers to and from its eight open locations.
