    Local roundup: Tigers win their opener at Dodd

    Norwich — The Connecticut Tigers opened their season with a 3-2 win over the Lowell Spinners in a New York-Penn League game on Friday night at Dodd Stadium.

    Carson Lance earned the win, allowing six hits and one run over the first five innings with five strikeouts and a walk.

    Isrrael De La Cruz and Cesar Gonzalez each had two hits and scored each and Ryan Karstetter (two hits) and Jose King drove in runs for the Tigers.

    Schooners win

    • Freddy Sabido (Wagner) hit a one-out, walk-off RBI single as the Mystic Schooners scored twice in the bottom of the ninth inning and ralled for a 6-5 win over Vermont Mountaineers in a New England Collegiate Baseball League game. Sebastiano Santorelli (Seton Hall) tied the game with an RBI single and scored the winning run.

    Thomas Girard (Duke) allowed one hit and an unearned run over four innings with seven strikeouts and one walk to earn the win for the Schooners. Starter Bret Clarke (SUNY Stony Brook) went five innings and struck out seven with one walk. Mic Wilson (Stony Brook) and Santorelli homered, Brett Rodrigurez (Wofford) was 3-for-4 and Santorelli was 2-for-4 with two runs scored for the Schooners (4-5).

    H.S. track

    • Stonington's team of Chase Flynn, Cam Whalen, Joey Hinckley and Rhys Hammond finished fourth in the emerging elite 1600-meter medley relay at the New Balance Nationals at Greensboro, N.C., finishing in 3:33.80. And the Bears' team of Shane Smith, Hinckley, Whalen and Hammond were 10th in the emerging elite 800 medley relay at 1:34.99. Whalen also finished 23rd in the emerging elite 110 hurdles with a time of 14.60.

    In the girls' meet, Stonington's Aliza Bell was 21st in the emerging elite javelin with a throw of 103-feet, 2-inches.  

    CGA's McNulty honored

    • Coast Guard sophomore Riley McNulty was named to the Intercollegiate Men's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IMLCA) Northeast All-Region team this past week. He becomes the first player in program history to be recognized by the IMLCA, earning second team All-Region honors as a midfielder.

    McNulty was a USILA Honorable Mention All-American, a NEILA Second Team midfielder and a First Team All-NEWMAC selection. He was named conference offensive player of the week three times and became the first player in program history to score 100 points. He is the career leader in points (133) and holds the teams single season records in points (71), goals (44) and assists (27).

    District 10 softball (11-12)

    • Ava Roach was 3-for-3 with a homer, two triples and four RBI as East Lyme beat Montville 22-7. Abby Robinson and Ava Roth each had two hits for East Lyme. Isabella Mitchell had two hits and Ellyce Lynes doubled for Montville.

    • Marina Colonis scored three runs and hit an insdie-the-park home run as Waterford beat Pawcatuck 21-4 in three innings. Lucy D'Amico was 2-for-3 and scored twice for Waterford. Brianna Plew had a hit and scored a run for Pawcatuck.

    • Pawcatuck beat Ledyard 18-3 on Thursday. Camerin Brown tripled, scored twice and drove in three runs for Pawcatuck and Maggie Thomas was the winning pitcher. Madison Allard, Carissa Church, Emily Fulling and Brianna Plew each drove in two runs for Pawcatuck.
