    Local roundup: Waterford wins state Babe Ruth (15) opener

    Waterford — Pitchers Ryan O'Connell and Trevor D'Amico combined to allow only two hits as as Waterford opened play in the Connecticut Babe Ruth 15-year-old baseball tournament with a 9-0 victory over Stratford on Saturday morning.

    Waterford will play New Milford, a 15-2 winner of Simsbury, in a winners' bracket game on Sunday at 11 a.m.

    O'Connell allowed both hits over four innings while striking out eight and D'Amico pitched three no-hit innings with four strikeouts.

    O'Connell also had two hits and scored two runs while Dan Driscoll had two hits, including a double, while scoring three runs and Ryan Bakken had a hit and two RBI.

    In another game, Stamford defeated Pawcatuck 7-1 in the first half behind the six-hit pitching of Michael Maloney. Andrew Blake had two hits and Andrew Champagne doubled for Pawcatuck, which will play Newington in the losers' bracket on Sunday at 2 p.m.

    CT Babe Ruth (13)

    • New Milford defeated East Lyme 12-5 in the opening round of the Connecticut Babe Ruth (13) tournament at Newtown. Patrick Kelly was 2-for-3 and Blake Biggs scored two runs for East Lyme, which plays North Haven in a losers' bracket game on Sunday at noon.

    NECBL

    • Kumar Nambiar (Yale) allowed just two hits over six innings and struck out nine as the Mystic Schooners beat the Plymouth Pilgrims, 5-0, in the first game of a doubleheader. Plymouth won the nightcap in eight innings, 3-2. Brett Rodriguez (Wofford) went 3-for-4 and scored twice in the first game for Mystic (15-12) and Freddy Sabido (Wagner) had two hits, including an RBI double, and scored.

    Cam Walsh (Northeastern) scored on a sacrifice fly by Elijah Dunham (Indiana) in the top of the eighth to give the Pilgrims the win in the second game. Sebastiano Santorelli (Seton Hall) doubled and scored, Rodriguez scored and Sabido had an RBI for the Schooners.

    New York-Penn League

    • Gresuan Silverio had three hits, including a double, with two RBI and a run as the Connecticut Tigers downed the Vermont Lake Monsters 6-3. Ryan Karstetter had two hits and two runs for the Tigers (10-12) and Dayton Dugas hit a solo home run with two RBI. Also, Adam Wolf scattered four hits over five innings with two earned runs and five strikeouts for the win. Jeremy Eierman hit an RBI triple and scored for the Lake Monsters (11-11).

    H.S. soccer

    • Ethan Rose, a recent Montville graduate, has been selected to the 2017-18 United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-America team. Selection is based on exemplary performance on the field and in the classroom. Rose, a midfielder, was named to the Class M all-state team and was an ECC Division II All-Star for the Indians while graduating with a 4.08 GPA. He will continue his soccer career at Keene State College in the fall, where he will be majoring in nursing.

    District 10 LL baseball (11-12)

    • Mystic defeated East Lyme 10-0 on the final day of pool play to earn the No. 1 seed for the upcoming District 10 semifinals. East Lyme will be the No. 2 seed and both will play opponents to be determined on Monday at Waterford. Jackson LaLima and Sidhaarth Bulusu combined to pitched a shutout for Mystic, which broke open a close game with seven runs in the fourth inning as David Haugeto, Trace Morales, Donte Valentine, Alex Starr and Bulusu each drove in runs. Morales also drove in a run in the first inning with a base hit while LaLima finishe d 3-for-3. Peter Sherwood had a double for East Lyme.

    District 10 SL softball (14-15)

    • Waterford advanced to the District 10 Senior League softball final with a 20-7 semifinal win over New London. Gretchen Dusza went the distance to earn the while Marilyn Childs had three hits, Maddie Collins and Kate Lange two apiece, and Dusza, Jaileen Barber, Emily Mitchell, Emma Monahan, Lexie Manguel and Emma Zito each added a hit. Cassandra Rock had a bases-clearing triple for New London. Waterford will play Ledyard for the championship on Sunday at noon.
