Upsets highlight Day 2 at 92nd Norwich Invitational

Norwich — The 92nd Norwich Invitational is proving to be wide open.

Defending champion Josh Cameron and medalist Drew Aitken, last year's runner-up, both were eliminated on Saturday. UConn golfer Nick Harrington, the 2016 champion, also is out.

Overall, nine of the top 10 seeds, including the first seven, were sent home.

Only one golfer remains in the championship flight with a Norwich Invite title to his credit and that's Bill Hermanson, who's from East Lyme and belongs to Black Hall Club in Old Lyme. He was the winner in 1995 and 1996.

Sunday morning's semifinals at Norwich Golf Course pit Hermanson, the No. 12 seed, against No. 8 Jim Lawler, while No. 15 Chris DeLucia faces No. 11 Rob Tedoldi.

The final match is scheduled to tee off at 2:15 p.m.

Hermanson started strong on Saturday, easing past Rob Neaton 8-and-7 in the round of 16 before squeezing past No. 13 Jeff Clang 1-up in the quarterfinals.

Lawler is making his first visit to the semifinals after beating No. 8 Sean Vigue 1-up and stunning Aiken, who shot a 5-under 66 in Friday's qualifying round, 3-and-2.

DeLucia negotiated a difficult path to the semifinals, as he knocked off Cameron 2-and-1 in his first match and then needed an extra hole to edge No. 7 Todd Lavoie. So far, the Norwich Invite title has eluded DeLucia, a seven-time Norwich club champion and Montville High School golf coach, during his competitive career.

Tedoldi defeated No. 6 Aaron Vargas 3-and-2 and No. 14 Joseph Romanelli 1-up. Romanelli had upset Harrington 2-and-1 in his round of 16 match.
