A chance for Democrats to take active role in vital election

Many folks in our area are now wrestling with the question of how best to take effective action to counter the dangerous threat to democracy posed by the Trump administration and its control of both houses of Congress.

Since our congressional district and Senate seats are thankfully in safe hands, it seems like we should be able to do more than just support our local candidates.

Well, here in the New London area we have an opportunity to volunteer for an excellent Democratic candidate running in a swing district now in Republican hands − a red district we can see from Ocean Beach.

The New York 1st Congressional District comprises the eastern half of Long Island along with Fishers Island. Incumbent Republican Congressman Lee Zeldin is engaged in a tight race with Democratic newcomer Perry Gershon, a strong environmentalist who supports sensible gun control and women’s reproductive rights.

We have an opportunity to combine relaxing ferry rides with three-hour stints knocking on doors for Gershon. The Gershon campaign welcomes our help and will provide materials and support for any Connecticut resident willing to cross the waters. In a close race, volunteers can make all the difference.
