Event to honor Korean War vets on Aug. 22

The Norwich Area Veterans Council and U.S. Rep. Joe Courtney, D-2nd District, will host an event at 5 p.m. on Aug. 22 at Three Rivers Community College to honor veterans who served during the Korean War.

The Korean Ambassador for Peace Medal will be presented to Korean War vets who served in Korea from June 25, 1950, to July 27, 1953, or who participated in U.N. peacekeeping operations until the end of 1955. Navy personnel who served aboard naval vessels assigned to Korean waters in that time frame are also eligible.

Korean War vets who already have received the medal and all veterans who served during the Korean War, but not in Korea, are eligible to receive a certificate of appreciation from Courtney at the program.

Vets interested in participating in the program will need to provide their DD-214 to Courtney's district office at 55 Main St., Suite 250 in Norwich. Please also provide a phone number and home address where the veteran can be reached.
