Shannon Koehler didn't bother to ask me. Neither did his brother Spence Koehler. Ditto for Elliot Peltzman, Brian Bakalian or Vince Dewald.

These, by the way, are the musicians in The Stone Foxes, a San Francisco band coming Thursday to the Mohegan Wolf Den for a free show.

What did they not ask me?

If I could think of a better band name than "The Stone Foxes" — and the answer would have been yes.

We have too many acts with "Stone" or derivations of "Stone" — Roses, Sly and Rolling being chief among them — and ditto for "Fox" — Fleet Foxes, Jackie Fox (from The Runaways) and, well, who can forget glam-fiends Britny Fox (no matter how much we might want to)?

Here's the thing, though. The Stone Foxes, as on recordings such as "12 Spells," "Visalia" or the new single "City on the Water," are a damned good rock 'n' roll band in an era when we need more of them.

The Stone Foxes, 8 p.m. Thursday, Mohegan Sun Wolf Den; free; 1-800-745-3000.
