North Stonington — Volunteers were out harvesting chardonnay grapes Wednesday at Jonathan Edwards Winery.

Vineyard Manager Chris Moore says the rains this fall have been a challenge for the crop. Gains he saw during the hot summer have been offset by the heavy precipitation, "the most rain I've ever seen in September," he added. He has been at the winery since 2006, vineyard manager since 2010, and said this is the worst season he's seen since the hurricane-soaked 2011 season.

He said he was hoping to harvest more chardonnay and some pinot gris before the rain expected Thursday.
