    Local roundup: New London volleyball team wins fourth straight

    Norwich — New London won its fourth straight with a 25-21, 25-7 and 25-19 win over Norwich Tech in a non-conference volleyball match on Monday.

    Marissa Parker had nine service points, seven kills and two blocks for the Whalers (4-11) while Yamilka Ramos added 11 service points, six aces and four kills, Chaylet Cintron had 18 service points and eight aces, and Caylee Parker had seven service points, eight digs and two blocks. Norwich Tech is 7-7.

    In other matches:

    • Fitch avenged an early-season 3-1 loss to Waterford by sweeping the Lancers at home, 25-16, 25-15 and 25-13. Nora Ryan had 10 kills for the Falcons (8-6) while Olivia Carney added 26 assists and Nyseannah Ishmael had 19 service points. Waterford (12-3) was led by Gretchen Dusza's 33 assists and Jenn Keth's 21 digs.

    • Maylyn Haydash had 12 assists and four aces to highlight Ledyard's 25-17, 25-17 and 25-19 win over Wheeler. Miranda Chesnut added five aces and eight kills while Katie Krupansky finished with four aces and 16 digs for the Colonels (9-7). Wheeler is 8-7.

    • Old Lyme dropped a Shoreline Conference match to Haddam-Killingworth 25-11, 25-12 and 25-19. Taylor Thompson had two kills and six digs for the Wildcats (1-14) and Caroline King added two aces and seven service points.

    • Wilcox Tech defeated Grasso Tech 25-21, 25-12 and 25-17 in the Connecticut Technical Conference. Michelle Warren had 12 digs for the Eagles while Samarie Delgado added four kills and 10 digs.

    H.S. girls' soccer

    • Vanessa Benjamin scored four goals as Stonington rolled to an 8-0 victory over Griswold in an ECC Division III match. The Bears (9-3-1, 6-1) can share the division title with Montville by defeating Griswold again on Oct. 22 at Griswold. Stonington and Montville split their season series and the Indians defeated St. Bernard 1-0 on Monday to complete Division II play at 7-1.

    Rachel Sabbadini, Holly Foster, Maysa Gray and Kaleigh Bolduc also scored goals for the Bears while Kate Johnson, Megan Detwiler, Jess Detwiler, Emma Sabbadini and Amelia Caron each had an assist.

    • Waterford battled back with a late goal and went on to tie Bacon Academy 1-1 in double overtime in an ECC Division II match. Trailing 1-0, Julia Karlberg scored following up a free kick by Julia Florek with 12 minutes remaining in regulation. The Lancers (5-6-1, 2-3-1) were outshot 12-6, but goalie Mya Rheaume made six saves in wet, muddy conditions.

    • Emilia Skrabacz scored a pair of goals in the first five minutes as New London rolled to a 5-1 non-conference win over Grasso Tech. Emily Fielding also scored twice for the Whalers (4-9), one on a 25-yard free kick, while Olivia Goode also scored a goal.

    • Britney DeRoehn scored a pair of goals and Danielle McCarthy added a pair of assists during Old Lyme's 6-0 win over Haddam-Killingworth in the Shoreline Conference. Kaylee Armenia, Melissa Mauro, Katie Funaro and Lydia Tinnerello each added a goal for the Wildcats (6-3-3, 4-2-2) whle Caroline Wallace, Emily DeRoehn and Lauren Wallace had one assist apiece and goalie Sam Gray made two saves.

    H.S. field hockey

    • Kristen Healy scored three goals as East Lyme outlasted Woodstock Academy 4-2 in the ECC. Sarah Healy added a goal and two assists for the Vikings (9-3, 8-1).

    • Zoe Pearse had three goals and an assist to lead Fitch to a 5-0 win over Fitch/Ledyard in the ECC. Michaela Ellis and Morgan Heller also scored goals for the Falcons (5-7, 3-5). NFA is 0-14, 0-10.

    H.S. boys' cross country

    • Wheeler swept the top five spots to win 15-50 at Fishers Island. Michael Carroll won the race in 22:00 for the Lions (3-7) and was followed by Cameron Reyes, Joe Giesing, Joe Biggs and Ben Dobley.

    H.S. girls' cross country

    • Wheeler defeated Fishers Island 15-50. Brittney Riggins, Bridget Riggins and Miranda Pabst went 1-2-3 for the Lions (4-5), Brittney Riggins winning in 27:18.

    College honors

    • Coast Guard Academy junior Michael Goldsworthy was named New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Defensive Athlete of the Week in football. Goldsworthy had a career-high three interceptions in a 15-0 win over Maine Maritime, and also had four tackles.

    • Coast Guard sophomore Kaitlyn Mooney was named NEWMAC Athlete of the Week in women's cross country for the fourth time this season after winning the Connecticut College Invitational at Harkness Memorial State Park in Waterford.

    • Mitchell College junior William Ferguson of Old Lyme was named New England Collegiate Conference Player of the Week in men's soccer. Ferguson scored a pair of goals and added an assist as the Mariners won two games last week.

    • Mitchell junior Nick Knisel was named NECC Golfer of the week and freshman Michael McCarthy was named Rookie of the Week after leading the Mariners to a season-ending win in the Mitchell Invite. Knisel was the individual medalist with a 76 and McCarthy was third with a 78.

    • Mitchell freshman Mark Garceau was named NECC Rookie of the Week in men's cross country after posting a season-best time of 30:23 over 8k at the Suffolk Invite.
