NFA's Glenney, Mitchell's Mara to be inducted into Connecticut Women's Basketball Hall of Fame
Marci Glenney, a 1997 Norwich Free Academy graduate who led the girls' basketball team to its first two state championships, and former Mitchell College women's coach Dan Mara will be inducted into the Connecticut Women's Basketball Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2019.
A three-time all-state pick and a 2014 inductee into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame, Glenney graduated as NFA's all-time leading scorer with 1,653 points, lifting the Wildcats to back-to-back Class LL state championships in 1996 and 1997. NFA was 27-0 in both seasons.
Glenney went on to play at UConn for two seasons before transferring to Clemson. She currently serves as an emergency room nurse in Atlanta.
Mara coached for 10 seasons at Mitchell, going 289-16 and leading the Pequots to 10 New England titles and two National Junior College Athletic Association Final Fours. In five different seasons, the Pequots reached the No. 1 ranking in the national poll. He is a member of the Mitchell College Hall of Fame, the New England Basketball Hall of Fame and the NJCAA Women's Basketball Hall of Fame.
Under Mara, Mitchell established the national record for regular-season victories with 234 and he coached 10 Kodak All-Americans, one of whom, Rita Williams, went on to play in the WNBA.
Mara, who lives in Waterbury, is currently the commissioner of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, a role he's held since 2006. In 2016, Mara was recognized by the Eastern College Athletic Conference as the Conference Commissioner of the Year.
Glenney (college player) and Mara (college coach) will be inducted into the Connecticut Women's Basketball Hall of Fame along with Frank Lombardo of Holy Cross (high school coach), Joyce Rivers of Lyman Hall (high school player), Katie Cizynski of Pomperaug (high school player), Ray Ulatowski (referee) and Joan Belmore (honorary).
The induction will take place Wednesday, April 24, 2019, at Cascade in Hamden.
