Police: Driver struck sign, guiderail, trees along I-395 in Montville

Montville — State police said a driver who struck a road sign, a guiderail and two trees during a pursuit along Interstate 395 north Monday evening was hospitalized with “suspected serious injuries.”

Police said Lavaughn Brown, 31, of Waterbury was driving his 2003 Audi A4 3.0 Quattro north on I-395 when, about 100 feet past the Exit 6 on-ramp, he drove off the left shoulder and into a road sign.

Troopers attempted to stop Brown but he continued north for about two miles, police said, then swerved to avoid stop sticks set up near the Troop E barracks.

Police said Brown drove off the left shoulder, struck a guiderail, swerved back across the highway and crashed into two trees off the right shoulder.

Montville firefighters took Brown to the William W. Backus Hospital with suspected serious injuries. Crews also took an unidentified passenger to Backus for treatment.

An update on their conditions wasn’t immediately available.

The state Department of Transportation said I-395 was closed in the area for about two-and-a-half hours.
