The idea of a touring double bill like Weezer and The Pixies seems like something that should have happened by now. The pair play Saturday in the Grand Theater at Foxwoods, and fans of each will certainly find something to enjoy about both sets — particularly since methinks Weezer songwriter Rivers Cuomo was inspired by Pixies leader Black Francis.

On the other hand, there's a whole generation of popular bands who learned the art of clashing mid-song dymanics from Francis, so ...

Weezer's been particularly busy, with a January release of "The Teal Album," a collection of mostly by-the-number cover tunes presumably paying homage to their own influences. Is it delicious that a fan-generated Weezer arrangement, possibly undertaken ironically by the band, of Toto's "Africa," is arguably going to be a bigger hit than anything Cuomo's written? Last week, Weezer came out with "The Black Album," full of new originals in which Cuomo continues to wax anxiously about the same things that have always caused his anxiety — just using piano as a main compositional tool rather than the Cheap Trick/Green Day guitarisms he normally employs.

As for The Pixies, they're scheduled to release a CD in September and, based on 2016's "Head Carrier," Francis continues to be an influential songwriter for a good reason.
