    Worcester man charged with DUI in Taftville crash

    Norwich — Police charged a Worcester man with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs in connection with a one-car rollover crash Tuesday evening on Hunters Road that caused serious injuries to one passenger.

    Antonio Santos Jr., 46, of Worcester, Mass., was charged at 9:12 p.m. Tuesday with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, use of a cellphone while driving, failure to drive right and driving an unregistered motor vehicle in connection with the crash at 7:52 p.m. Tuesday. He was released on a $2,500 bond and is scheduled to appear April 30 in Norwich Superior Court.

    Taftville Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief said Tuesday night that the vehicle was traveling eastbound on Hunters Road when it struck the guide wire on a utility pole and flipped onto its roof onto an area of soft ground just off the roadway. A fire hydrant was damaged in the crash and is out of service.

    One of the two adult male passengers was taken by ambulance to The William W. Backus Hospital with a serious injury. Identities of the passengers were not available.
