    ECC tennis: Hamm, Cote reach girls' final; Power to face Stiger in boys' final

    Stonington — Following a day filled with upsets, the top seeds held true to form on Day 2 of the Eastern Connecticut Conference girls' tennis tournament at Stonington High School on Wednesday.

    And when the singles and doubles championships are held on Thursday at 3 p.m., the top two seeds in each match will be competing for their first titles.

    Top-seeded Stonington freshman Maddie Hamm will play No. 2 Samantha Cote, a senior from Fitch, for the singles title while No. 1 Cassie Onorato-Amelia Caron of Stonington will face No. 2 Emily Zhu-Liz Beaulieu of East Lyme in the doubles finale.

    Hamm defeated No. 25 Shauna Kim of East Lyme 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinals and No. 4 Mari Ruggeri of Woodstock Academy 6-2, 6-2 in the semis. Cote, meanwhile, beat No. 10 Ainsley Johnstone in the quarterfinals after Johnstone was forced to retire with an injury after losing the first set 6-1. Cote then beat No. 3 Anna Slopak of Norwich Free Academy 6-0, 6-1 in the semifinals.

    Onorato, a senior, and Caron, a sophomore, beat Stonington teammates Grace Milne and Mia Lewandowski, the No. 13 seed, 7-5, 6-3, while Zhu, a senior, and Beaulieu, a junior, eliminated No. 7 Emma Durand and Rachel Lambert of Woodstock 7-5, 6-3.

    Boys

    • Defending champion Finn Power of East Lyme cruised into his second straight ECC singles final, but he will face a different opponent in Thursday's 3 p.m. final at East Lyme High School.

    The top-seeded junior rolled to wins over No. 8 Sean Bessette of Stonington (6-1, 6-2) and No. 4 David Fleck of Woodstock (6-0, 6-2), but No. 2 seed William Michelson of Stonington, who lost to Finn in the 2018 final, was beaten by his teammate, No. 3 Jake Stiger, 6-1, 6-7, 6-1 in the semifinals.

    Stiger reached the semis with a 6-1, 6-7, 6-1 win over No. 6 Eric Gu of East Lyme, while Michelson defeated No. 10 Sumeet Kadian of East Lyme 2-6, 6-0, 6-1 in his quarterfinal match.

    The doubles final will be a matchup of East Lyme teammates as top-seeded Jonathan Tan and Guillem Colom will face No. 3 Sujesh Kurumbail and Ethan Stewart. Tan-Colom beat No. 4 Tim Lynch-Aidan McLean 6-2, 6-1 in the semis while Kurumbail-Stewart ousted No. 2 Graham Johnstone-Kyle Remmert of Stonington 6-4, 6-7, 6-2 in the semis.
