Preston crash leads to DWI arrest

Preston — State police arrested a New Jersey man on drunken driving and other charges early Sunday after they say he crashed his car and then fled.

Phillip C. Wise, 38, of Newark, N.J. was traveling east on Route 2A in Preston at 3:58 a.m. when police said he was clocked by a trooper traveling 86 mph.

Wise lost control of his Kia Forte at the intersection of Route 2A and Route 12, struck a metal guardrail, traveled down an embankment and into the woods. Wise was not in the vehicle when a trooper arrived.

Wise, located a half mile from the scene of the crash, declined medical treatment. He was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, evading responsibility, reckless driving and possession of less than one half ounce of marijuana.

Held in lieu of a $1,000 cash bond, Wise is due to appear July 25 in Norwich Superior Court.
