Ben Folds, Femmes share Sun Arena gig Sunday

    Ben Folds (benfolds.com)

Music fans tend to be more forgiving with the passage of time. Double-headline concerts we would have angrily protested 20 years ago suddenly make sense — or at least seem more reasonable. A few years back, it was Tears for Fears and Hall & Oates. Last week, it was Elvis Costello & the Attractions and Blondie.

Now, on Sunday in the Mohegan Sun Arena, Meshugga headlines with Bread opening. (That's a joke — although I think I'd go to that.)

What's really happening at the Sun is that pop-turning-classical pianist Ben Folds shares a bill with ragged folk-punkers Violent Femmes. Seems odd to me, but it's probably true that at least some tunes from each act will resonate with the more broad-minded folks who happened to be in college during those artists' rise to popularity.

Probably it will all work out, but check around at the show to see if anyone's taken a Sharpie and heavily marked through one or the other names on the shirts at the merch table.

Ben Folds and Violent Femmes, 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Mohegan Sun Arena; with Savannah Conley; $25-$45; 1-800-745-3000.
