Ledyard — A Monday afternoon kitchen fire on Route 12 in Gales Ferry displaced seven adults, one child and "several" pets but caused no injuries, officials said.

Gales Ferry volunteer firefighters said they quickly knocked down the 1 p.m. fire at 1561 Route 12. They said Ledyard Animal Control helped secure the rescued pets. Ledyard and submarine base firefighters also were on scene.

The fire marshal is investigating the cause of the blaze.

Property records show the four-bedroom house, built in 1962, belongs to Stanley McCreary of Moberly, Mo.

The American Red Cross is helping the displaced family.
