    Local roundup: CGA men win opener of MCLA soccer tournament

    North Adams, Mass. — Coast Guard Academy scored a pair of goals in the second half to defeat the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts 2-0 in the opening round of the MCLA men's soccer tournament on Friday.

    Robbie Fugett broke a scoreless tie for the Bears (1-1) in the 56th minute before Seth Anderson scored with 12 minutes remaining (Noah Engstrom assisted).

    Coast Guard outshot the Trailblazers 19-8.

    James Morrison made four saves to record the shutout and his first career win for the Bears, who face Elms on Saturday at noon to close out the tournament

    In another game:

    • Adrian Barajas and Diego Arribas scored goals less than three minutes apart as Fairleigh Dickinson handed No. 23 UConn its first loss 2-1 in a match played at the University of Hartrford. Jodan Hall, assisted by Dayonn Harris, scored his sixth goal of the season to have the Huskies (2-1) an early 1-0. UConn held a 12-5 edge in shots.

    College volleyball

    • Coast Guard split a pair of matches on the opening night of the CGA/Conn College tournament, losing to No. 6 Johnson & Wales 25-11, 25-20, 25-18 and defeating Roger Williams 25-20, 25-17, 25-11. The Bears (4-2) complete the two-day tourney on Saturday by hosting DeSales (11 a.m.) and Tufts (3 p.m.).

    In the loss to Johnson & Wales, Noelle Tursky led Coast Guard with a match-high 10 kills to go with 11 assists and six digs, while Angelou Dunton and Amanda Dake each had five kills, Makenna Martin 14 assists and Veronica Hine a team-high seven digs.

    In the win over Roger Williams, Dake had 11 kills, five digs and one assist while Tursky added a match-high 16 assists with nine kills and seven digs, Martin had 15 assists and Dunton finished with six kills, four digs and two assists.

    • Conn College opened its season with a 25-16, 25-12, 25-16 win over DeSales in the CGA/Conn College tournament on Friday night. The Camels conclude the tourney with Saturday games against Roger Williams (1 p.m.) and Brandeis (3 p.m.). Grace McGee led Conn with 20 assists, 11 digs, two kills and two aces while Emma Roberts added seven aces, Bridget Fatse and Avery Light had eight kills apiece and Katie Gunderman finished with six kills, four aces and two blocks.

    College field hockey

    • No. 4 UConn scored a goal in each half to defeat No. 19 Rutgers 2-0 in its home opener. Marie Auer scored in the first half for the Huskies (3-0) while Sophie Hamilton added an insurance goal in the second half. UConn outshot the Scarlet Knights (2-1) 21-11.

    Black Wolves sign LaFontaine

    • The New England Black Wolves signed John LaFontaine to a three-year contract extension, pending league approval. LaFontaine joined the Wolves in 2017 via a trade with the Saskatchewan Rush. A defenseman, he had one goal, five assists and 42 loose balls last season.

    "Laffy is an integral part not only on our backend but to the overall make-up of the Black Wolves," genermal manager Rick Lisk said in a release. "He is one of the best defensemen in the NLL and when you combine his athleticism, lacrosse IQ and leadership on and off the field — he is exactly the type of player we look for."
