Water taxi offers special schedule for weekend maritime festival

New London — The Thames River Heritage Park will offer a special schedule for the hop-on, hop-off water taxi service on Saturday and Sunday during the Connecticut Maritime Heritage Festival being held at Fort Trumbull and City Pier in New London.

The water taxi will operate continuous express water taxi service between Fort Trumbull and City Pier in New London and between Fort Trumbull and Thames River Landing in Groton from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The water taxi will operate on a regular schedule Friday and after 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The last day of operation for the hop-on, hop-off taxi run for 2019 is Sunday, Sept. 15. Themed boat tours will be offered for a few more weekends. Go to for details.

The heritage park also will offer two 90-minute boat tours on Sunday at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. “Canoe to Submarine: Maritime History on the Thames,” will include stories of whaling and provisioning, privateering, industry and defense, as well as tales of some of the characters who made the local heritage colorful. The cost is $20 for adults. Children ages 12 and under is $12. Seating is limited.

The Thames River Heritage Park is a collection of national and historic sites along both shores of the Thames River that tell the stories that shaped our nation and our region. The two water taxis are authentic Navy launches that were used to transport service men and women from larger ships to shore.
