Around the region

• UConn junior Megan Walker was named American Athletic Conference Player of the Week in women's basketball after contributing 23 points and a career-high 12 rebounds in a 75-37 win at Dayton.

• For the second time in his Boston College career, running back AJ Dillon of New London has been selected the Harry Agganis/Harold Zimman Award winner by the New England Football Writers. The award honors the most outstanding player in New England. Dillon has rushed for 1,685 yards and 14 touchdowns this season for the Eagles. Dillon also made the Division I All-New England team. UConn senior offensive lineman Matt Peart also earned a spot on the team.

• East Lyme High School graduate Cara Bradley, a senior member of the Trinity College field hockey team, earned New England Small College Athletic Conference All-Academic team honors.

• Seth Thomas of Norwich is a sophomore forward on the Eastern Connecticut State University men's basketball team. Through five games, he is averaging 9.2 points and 6.8 rebounds. Also at Eastern, Callan Veltheim, a senior from New London, is one of two captains for the women's swim team.

• Two Waterford graduates are wrestling for Rhode Island College. Senior Samuel Lindbolm won his first two matches, both by decisions at 157 pounds, against Plymouth State and Southern Maine last month. Freshman Eric Zane started his college career with a win by decision at 149 pounds against Plymouth State.

• Senior tri-captain Collin Sawyer has scored in double figures in all six games, including a season-high tying 21 points in the Brandeis men's basketball team's win last week over UMass Dartmouth. Sawyer, a New London graduate, is averaging 17.5 points.

• Stony Brook forward India Pagan, a junior from New London, is second on her basketball team in scoring (10.8 points) and rebounding (5.4) in seven starts.

• Western Connecticut State University sophomore Madison Lacy, a Norwich Free Academy graduate, took first place in the 200 freestyle in a victory over Lehman College on Nov. 23. She also was second in the 50 and 100 freestyle.

• Salve Regina junior forward Cameron Collins, a Montville graduate, has scored at least 20 points in three of his five starts this season. He finished with 21 points and five rebounds and went 10 for 15 from the field in Sunday's 99-68 win over Dean College. He's averaging 16.6 points and 4.2 rebounds. Also at Salve, Alick Furtick, a former two-year member of the Mitchell College basketball team, an assistant coach.

• Former UConn defensive coordinator and Waterford native Billy Crocker recently completed his first season at Elon University in North Carolina. Under Crocker, the assistant head coach and defensive coordinator, Elon (6-6) finished sixth out of 12 teams in scoring defense in the Colonial Athletic Association, allowing 27 points per game.

Tracking the Bears

• The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference picked Coast Guard sophomore Kyra Hartman as Defensive Player of the Week in women's basketball. Hartman averaged 12.5 points and 11.5 rebounds in two games for the Bears. Twelve of her career-high 16 rebounds against UMass Boston were on the defensive end.

Camel highlights

The Connecticut College men's basketball is off to a 2-5 start under first-year coach Tim Sweeney. The Camels won a combined 13 games over the previous two seasons. They've already gone into overtime three times, winning two. Freshman Ben McPherron is the leading scorer, averaging 14 points, while junior Daniel Draffan is averaging a team-best nine rebounds to go with 11.3 points. Conn hosts Coast Guard at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

Mariners riding a wave

• Mitchell freshman Alfonzo Stokes was named the New England Collegiate Conference men's basketball rookie of the week after scoring a season-high 13 points in nine minutes of action against Wentworth. Stokes is averaging 8.5 points and two rebounds per game.

• Through five games, sophomore forward Amina Wiley leads the women's basketball team in points and rebounds with 17.2 and 12.6, respectively.
