Man in Thames River in New London taken to hospital for hypothermia

New London — A man who firefighters and police found clinging to a dock in the Thames River on Friday morning was taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital for treatment of hypothermia, according to a New London Fire Department official.

The New London Emergency Communications Center received multiple 911 calls about 10:25 a.m. reporting someone in the Thames River behind the A&W Marina at 178 Pequot Ave., Battalion Chief Mark Waters said in a news release.

Waters said a U.S. postal worker and other bystanders were trying to help the man when emergency responders arrived. Rescuers threw a rope to the victim and he was out of the water minutes later.

A New London Fire Department ambulance took him to Lawrence + Memorial for treatment.
