    New London Arts Council launches

The newly formed New London Arts Council (NLAC) will hold its inaugural meeting at 5 p.m. Tuesday at 7 Governor Winthrop Blvd., New London.

This initiative was spearheaded by individual artists and arts related non-profits and businesses in the city with the goal of identifying and creating opportunities to meet the artistic needs of the New London arts community and to work with the city and state as necessary to strengthen the arts in New London. The mayor’s office and administration as well as the Southeastern CT Cultural Coalition both offered support and guidance throughout the process.

A steering committee of volunteers comprised of individual artists representing artistic disciplines, small and large non-profit arts organizations, as well as community arts-related businesses met over the course of the last year to build a structure for the new organization that is inclusive and representative of the current arts community in the city. The stated mission of the New London Arts Council is to “encourage and serve a vibrant, inclusive arts community.”

NLAC meetings will be open to all engaged in the arts in the city. An interim council selected by the steering committee will serve for the first six months to build membership and community support leading to selection of the first official council leadership later this year.

The group has established pages on Facebook and Instagram where updated information will be posted regularly and those interested in more information can reach out with questions.
