Checking in with Brigid: "Distance runners are by far some of the nicest, most supportive, compassionate and genuine people I have ever met. Often, at track meets, I will literally make new friends on the line, 30 seconds before the gun goes off."

What you need to know about Brigid: Kunka was a State Open qualifier last spring in the 3,200 and with her teammates in the 4x800 relay, an achievement she picks as perhaps the most memorable of her career. "It was even more special because (in 2018), my coach mentioned that making Opens (in the 4x800) might be a once in a lifetime experience for us because we weren't sure what the next year held and were losing quite a big part of our distance team," Kunka said. "So not only to make it again, but to also run in a complete downpour and not give up after a long day in the sun and bad weather, was a very special thing." Kunka tied for the ECC 3,200 title last year with Bacon Academy's Jordan Malloy, as each finished in a dead heat at 11 minutes, 54.75 seconds. As a senior, Kunka was a double-winner at the ECC Division II championship meet indoors, finishing first in the 3,200 (12:23.86) and joining teammates Sophia Duhig, Adeline Arvidson and Serena Britner for a win in the 4x720 relay (9:21.93). At the Class S state meet, Kunka passed up her individual events to run the 4x800 and sprint medley relays, leading each to a third-place finish. "Being part of a team and drawing strength from your teammates and then seeing the success that comes from your hard work as a team is so much more rewarding," Kunka said. Kunka plans to run at Coast Guard. She picked her future major to follow in the footsteps of her dad, Kevin, who is a mechanical engineer at Electric Boat. She loves the school spirit surrounding St. Bernard basketball games, her two dogs Finn and Zoe, running on the beach and kettle corn while watching a movie. Brigid and her sister Rachel were pictured in The Day in 2005 while having their hair cut.
