Video: Morris Men celebrate a rainy May Day
New London — Everett Munro of the Westerly Morris Men danced in front of the home of Connecticut College President Katherine Bergeron as she and her husband, Butch Rovan, watched from their front stoop just after sunrise on Friday in New London.
Munro was accompanied by Westerly Morris Men founder Peter Leibert, playing under an umbrella held by his wife, Jane. Leibert, 79, and Munro, 81, were the only two members of the group who braved the early morning rain to continue their 44-year tradition of welcoming the arrival of spring with song and dance at sunrise on the first of May on the Connecticut College campus.
In previous years, six or more dancers celebrated May Day with a small audience on the college's Tempel Green. This year, with the college campus closed due to the coronavirus, Leibert and Munro performed one dance at the green and one more in front of Bergeron's home.
The group also dances every year at sunrise on the first day of spring atop Lantern Hill in North Stonington.
