Stonington police say thieves are stealing unlocked cars with key fobs inside

Stonington -- Police are cautioning residents to not leave key fobs and valuables inside unlocked vehicles after three car thefts over the past week.

Capt. Todd Olson said Monday that two unlocked vehicles were stolen from the Hewitt Road area in Mystic Sunday night after their owners left the key fobs inside.

And last week he said a Range Rover was stolen from a Montauk Avenue home after its owners left it unlocked with the key fob inside.

Olson said there have been similar recent thefts in other shoreline towns. He said the thieves do not break into the vehicles but check to see if they are open and then look for valuables. If it’s a vehicle they are interested in stealing, they push the start button which will start the vehicle if the key fob is inside the car.

Olson urged residents to lock cars and take their valuables and key fobs inside their homes.
