Norwich woman charged with animal cruelty in alleged dog mauling of chicken

Norwich — A local woman was charged with cruelty to animals Friday based on a warrant for an incident on Feb. 1, when she allegedly allowed her two pit bull dogs to attack and kill a chicken.

Pamela L. Cheney, 36, of 89 School St., Apt. C, turned herself into police Friday and was charged with cruelty to animals and breach of peace. She was released on a $5,0000 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned in Norwich Superior Court Dec. 17.

Police said they were called to the incident on Feb. 1 on a report that Cheney was outside in the rear dirt parking area at 286 Central Ave. with her dogs and a chicken. “The chicken was making the shrieking noises, because the dogs were reportedly mauling it to death,” the police report stated. “The accused reportedly allowed this to happen.”

Police said a carcass of a dead chicken was found in a nearby garbage bin.
