    Three people taken to hospital following head-on collision in Groton

    Groton — Three people were injured, including one person who was flown by Life Star Helicopter to Hartford Hospital with serious injuries, in a head-on collision Tuesday afternoon, police said.

    Police said a 2009 Hyundai Sante Fe, heading east on Route 184, near the intersection of Flanders Road, and a 2015 Dodge Ram pickup truck, heading west on Route 184 in that same area, collided, according to a news release from the Groton Town Police Department. The crash was reported about 3:18 p.m.

    According to the report, the driver of the Hyundai sustained serious injuries and was taken by ambulance to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital and then flown by Life Star Helicopter to Hartford Hospital. The driver of the Dodge and a passenger sustained injuries and were taken by ambulance to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London.

    Gold Star Highway was closed temporarily at the intersections of Flanders Road to the east and Rogers Road to the west while police were at the scene.

    Groton Town Police Department, Old Mystic Fire Department, Poquonnock Bridge Fire Department, Groton Ambulance and medics from L+M responded, according to the report.

    The police department’s Patrol Division is investigating the causes of the crash, with help from the Southeastern Connecticut Regional Traffic Unit. Police ask anyone who witnessed the crash or who has any information to call the police department at (860) 441-6712.
