Pharmacies to close at ShopRite in New London, Norwich

As part of a plan to close 62 pharmacies over the next month, ShopRite is closing five of its 20 pharmacy locations in Connecticut — including the ones in New London and Norwich.

The tentative closing dates are Feb. 22 for Norwich and Feb. 23 for New London. ShopRite corporate spokesperson Karen O'Shea said customer prescription files will be automatically and securely transferred to a nearby CVS, and ShopRite is notifying impacted customers.

"The pharmacy industry is highly competitive and we were unable to sustain sufficient sales despite our marketing efforts, which led to the difficult decision to close these store pharmacies," O'Shea said in an email. She said most pharmacies — 147 of them — will remain open.

Pharmacists and technicians at the pharmacies that are closing will have an opportunity to interview with CVS, O'Shea said, and all support staff will be offered positions in ShopRite stores.
