Equity is a goal, equality a curse

We have all experienced a very difficult time during the pandemic, and we all fervently hope our future will be brighter. Unfortunately, our shared experience has not also brought us together. Intolerance at times seems to rule the day. Instead of trying to find common ground, too many are willing to “cancel” those who hold different opinions, and there is little attempt to find common ground. This was evident when an East Lyme Board of Education member chose to denigrate comments made in opposition to his opinion.

Lately, the words “equity” and “equality” are front and center. I respectfully suggest you take a few minutes from your day and read the satirical short story “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut. It is chilling because it could be our future if people do not recognize what is happening right now. If people do not know or understand the difference between equity and equality, they will after reading this. If people do not recognize government overreach, they should after reading this.
