    Local roundup: Vigue earns top seed at Norwich Invitational

    Norwich — Sean Vigue of the Windham Club won the top seed in the 95th annual Norwich Invitational, shooting a 69 in Friday's qualifying round at the Norwich Golf Course.

    Joining Vigue in the 16-team championship flight match play are defending champion Josh Cameron, Matt Fuller, John Darigan, Dave Jones, Steve Chevalier, Mike Nevins, Dave Marshall, Drew Aitken, Bill Hermanson, Ryan Black, Mac Patch, Tim Murray, Brian Zito, Brett Shulick and John Aitken.

    The first round and quarterfinals for each flight are Saturday with semifinals and finals on Sunday.

    NECBL

    • The Bristol Blues held the Mystic Schooners to five hits in a 7-2 victory. Brendan Cumming (Princeton) had two hits for the Schooners (13-14). The Schooners also lost to the Blues 11-5 on Thursday night. Cumming had two hits and drove in two runs and Michael DeMartino (SCSU) hit a two-run homer and scored twice for Mystic.

    FCBL

    • The Westfield Starfires beat the Norwich Sea Unicorns 8-4 on Thursday night. Montville's Dougie DelaCruz (Mitchell) had a three-run double for Westfield (17-19). Kaelen Culpepper (Kansas State) and Korey Morton (UConn) had two hits each for Norwch (18-20).

    Zone 6 Junior Legion

    • Patrick Terry pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts and two earned runs as Norwich beat Willimantic 9-4 on Thursday, handing Willimantic it's first loss. Dan St. George was 3-for-4 and Conner Doyle singled, doubled and drove in three runs for Norwich (3-1). 

    State Babe Ruth (15)

    • New London advanced to the championship round with a 5-3 win over Naugatuck on Thursday. Winning pitcher Martin Light struck out five and Ralphie Sanchez doubled, scored a run and drove in three runs for New London.

    Avery Point honors

    • The Avery Point women's basketball team has earned the Team Academic Award from the National Junior College Athletic Association for its work in the classroom for the second straight year. All credits taken by student-athletes during the course of the academic year must be accounted for to be eligible for the award, regardless of withdrawal or change to pass/fail. The Pointers had a 3.08 team grade point average. Last year's mark was 3.03.

    • Ten student-athletes from Avery Point have been honored with All-Academic Team status from the NJCAA for their work in the classroom. Honored were Bobby Arent, Enrique Diaz, John D'Urso, Max Grossman of Groton, Dominic Morabito of Lisbon and Jeremy Nunes of the baseball team, Samantha Caster of North Stonington, Carsen Keith of Preston and Adeline Smith of Niantic of the women's basketball team and Nik Hay of the men's basketball team.
