Car crashes into utility pole on Poquonnock Road, knocks out power in Groton

Groton — Groton Utilities was working to restore power Tuesday evening after a one-car accident into a utility pole in the area of Poquonnock and South roads caused a power outage, Poquonnock Bridge Fire Department Capt. Jason Pollard said.

Pollard said the accident at 5:39 p.m. Tuesday affected the utility high-tension wires, which sparked a brush fire. Firefighters extinguished the fire, which did not cause damage.

The driver of the car had minor injuries, Pollard said.

Groton Utilities said in a Facebook post Tuesday evening that: "There is currently a power outage in the Poquonnock Road and South Road area due to a car accident that damaged a utility pole. Crews have been dispatched to make the area safe and assess necessary repair work options. We will work on the problem until it is resolved."

As of about 10 p.m., Route 1 between South and Buddington roads had been reopened, Groton Town police said, and power had been restored. Groton Utilities' website said there were no outages at 10 p.m.
