    Local roundup: Wednesday's UConn-Marquette women's basketball game postponed

    The Big East Conference announced Sunday night that Wednesday's women's basketball game between No. 11 UConn and Marquette at the XL Center in Hartford has been postponed indefinitely due to COVID-19 issues within the Marquette program.

    The Huskies (6-3, 1-0) are scheduled to play again on Friday when they visit DePaul (11-3,  3-0) in Chicago at 2 p.m.

    The UConn athletic department said season ticket holders will retain access to their seats for any rescheduled contest. If the game is unable to be rescheduled, UConn athletics will credit the account of a season ticket holder at the conclusion of the season.

    Patrons who purchased a three-game mini-plan or single-game ticket to the game can utilize their same game ticket(s) for the rescheduled game.

    College football

    • Doug Shearer, a 2013 UConn graduate, has been named the Huskies' special teams coordinator, head coach Jim Mora announced.

    Shearer returns to UConn after spending the past three seasons in the same position at Miami of Ohio.

    "I'm happy to welcome Doug back to UConn, and I know how excited he is about rejoining his alma mater," Mora said. in a release. "Special teams are critical to the success of any program, and Doug's special teams units at Miami were extremely efficient and impactful. Doug is also a genuine individual who is driven to help student-athletes reach their potential, and I can't wait for him to get started."

    Shearer spent the 2013 season as a graduate assistant at UConn, then spent five seasons as an assistant at North Carolina State.

    "I am thankful to Coach Mora for the opportunity to join his coaching staff and come back to UConn," Shearer said. "I couldn't be more excited to get to Storrs and start building relationships with our players and coaches."

    H.S. boys' basketball

    • Connor Keefe had 19 points and 12 rebounds during Ledyard's 61-56 victory over Fitch on Thursday night. Peyton Luther added 16 points for the Colonels.
