A well-earned retirement for Dr. Blefeld

Today marks the end of an era in pediatric medicine in Groton. Dr. Michael Blefeld has retired after practicing medicine in the Mystic/Groton area for over 40 years.

Dr. Blefeld began his practice in Mystic in May of 1981 when he joined Dr. Ben Kittredge. In 1985 he opened his solo practice in Gold Star Park in Groton where he has been until his retirement.

Early in his career in southeastern Connecticut, Dr. Blefeld was active in the Groton Well Baby Clinics. For years he served as the medical doctor for both Groton and Stonington Schools in addition to advising the Child and Family Agency. He was an incredible advocate for children with learning disabilities and ADHD putting in long hours speaking with parents and seeking the right services for these patients. His love of his vocation was most visible when he picked up a newborn from the exam table and held him close. Dr. Blefeld saw many changes in medicine over his years of practice and he and his staff worked hard to meet all the challenges change brings. Gold Star Pediatrics is now managed by ProHealth Physicians.

Dr. Blefeld loves gardening, painting, traveling, and spending time with his wife, children and five grandchildren.
