Correa siblings to be sentenced on same day

Sergio and Ruth Correa, the Hartford siblings convicted in a 2017 triple murder in Griswold, now are scheduled to be sentenced on the same day.

On May 3, they will appear in New London Superior Court. Both were found guilty last year in the killings of Kenneth, Janet and Matthew Lindquist during one of the most brutal crime sprees in recent Connecticut history.

Sergio Correa, 30, originally was set to be sentenced on March 2. His sentencing was delayed when Supervisory Assistant State's Attorney Stephen M. Carney, who prosecuted the case, tested positive for COVID-19.

The trial, which started in November, had been delayed extensively due to pandemic-related court closures. In December, a jury convicted Sergio Correa on 13 charges, including one count of murder with special circumstances, which carries the harshest penalty a person can face in the state: life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Ruth Correa, 27, last summer pleaded guilty to three counts of murder. She agreed to testify against her adoptive brother in exchange for a recommended sentence of 40 years, instead of the 180 years she faced without the agreement.

At his trial, with little to no emotion, she recounted the hours the siblings spent inside the Lindquist home, which she said they set on fire toward the end of their crime spree. Painting her brother as the criminal mastermind who plotted to trade drugs for guns that night, Ruth Correa said her brother took her hand and forced her to stab Matthew Lindquist repeatedly. She also told the court that she bludgeoned the Lindquist family dog, Skylar, with a golf club.

Sergio Correa will be sentenced first, at 10 a.m., according to court records. Ruth Correa, a mother of two, will be sentenced at 2 p.m.
