Memphis classic rock/soul act the Box Tops hit The Kate Saturday

    The Box Tops (Contributed)

What?! It's time to write a preview of an upcoming concert by the Box Tops?

    Certain protocols must be met!

Make sure to mention that group founder Alex Chilton left to form power pop legends Big Star. (check)

Make sure to mention that Chilton did NOT write, as many assume, the Box Tops's #1 hit "The Letter." (check)

Add that freelance country musician/tunesmith wrote "The Letter." (check)

Remind readers that, in "The Letter," the singer's "baby" misses him. She sends the titular missive. Well, HE misses HER, too. So much so that the singer "ain't" got time to take a fast train to get back to his "baby," so he orders an unknown listener to get him a ticket on an "aeroplane." (check)

That's correct — "aeroplane" as opposed to "airplane." (check)

Where are the Box Tops in all this?

It's not all about Chilton and "The Letter." The band also had hits with "Cry Like a Baby," "Soul Deep," "Sweet Cream Ladies, Forward March," "Choo Choo Train" and more, so even though Chilton left the band early, they stayed moderately popular. The latest incarnation of the Box Tops, including original members Gary Talley and Bill Cunningham, play Saturday at The Kate.

    Be there. (check?)

The Box Tops, 8 p.m. Saturday, Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center, 300 Main St., Old Saybrook; $50; www.thekate.org, (860) 510-0453.
