    NFA boys qualify for State Open cross country as a wild card

    The Norwich Free Academy boys’ cross country team, which finished ninth Saturday in the Class LL state championship, qualifed for the Friday’s State Open as one of eight wild card teams and will join state champions Griswold (Class SS) and East Lyme (Class MM) in the boys’ race and Old Lyme (second place, Class S) in the girls’ race.

    The top two teams from each division qualified for the Open, along with the next eight fastest teams. The top 12 runners in each division also got in along with the next 30 fastest runners.

    NFA, led by junior Sawyer Barile in 33rd place, finished with a team time of 1 hour, 28 minutes, 29 seconds. Seven of the eight wild card teams came from Class LL, with the eighth, E.O. Smith, coming from Class MM.

    The girls’ race Friday will begin at 2 p.m. at Wickham Park, with the boys’ race scheduled for 2:45 p.m.

    Boys, Ryan Moores (Bacon Academy), Hayden Baber (Ledyard), Dylan Horkey (Montville), Ryan Gruczka (Stonington) and Ethan Sweet (Wheeler).

    Girls, Kennedy Holsapple (East Lyme), Hazel DeLucia (Lyman Memorial), Maya Suarez (Montville), Eliana Duclos (NFA), Helena Coury (St. Bernard), Peyton Vanderstreet (Stonington), Avery Maiese (Waterford) andf Kaitlyn Kumpf (Wheeler).
