Extended stay hotel proposed on Route 2 in Pawcatuck

Stonington— The owner of the La Quinta Inn and Suites hotel on Route 2 in Pawcatuck has submitted an application to build an 80-room extended stay hotel just down the street.

Mystic Sahajanand LLC, whose principal is Mukesh Patel, filed a special use permit application with the Planning and Zoning Commission for the 321 Liberty St. property earlier this month for the proposed Extended Stay America hotel.

The hotel would be located on a lot that borders the Tractor Supply store to the south. The two businesses would share a driveway.

Floor plans of the five-story building included in the application show that the first floor would offer guest laundry facilities and a fitness room, among other amenities, and that each guest room would include a small kitchen area.

A 90-space parking lot to the east of the building would accommodate guests and employees.

The 8.8-acre property overlooking the Pawcatuck River is currently the site of a 1,443-square-foot barn, which would be demolished.

An application to the Inland Wetlands and Watercourses Commission, due to wetlands present on the property, was unanimously approved Feb. 22.

The Planning and Zoning Commission will hold a public hearing on the application, though no date has been set yet.

Extended Stay America is a Charlotte, N.C.-based firm with 650 locations across the country, according to its website. Its hotels provide apartment-style units with kitchens for longer stays.

The 75-room La Quinta, which borders the Tractor Supply store to the north, opened in 2009. The Tractor Supply store opened in 2010.
