State to activate extreme hot weather protocol

The state plans to activate its extreme hot weather protocol from noon Tuesday through 8 p.m. Thursday, Gov. Ned Lamont announced Monday.

“While enacted, a system is set up for state agencies, municipalities, and other partners to coordinate with United Way 2-1-1 to make sure that information regarding cooling centers is available statewide, providing a location to get some relief,” according to the release.

Temperatures are expected to be near or reach the low 90s, with a heat index into the mid-90s in some inland parts of the state, according to a news release.

“Anyone vulnerable to the heat is advised to take precautions,” Lamont said in a statement. “Cooling centers are open throughout Connecticut and can be located by calling 2-1-1 or visiting 211ct.org.”

The release notes anyone can face a heat-related illness, but higher risk populations include, infants and young children, people 65 and older, people who are overweight, people who overexert themselves, and people who are ill, especially with heart disease or high blood pressure, or who take certain medications, such as for depression, insomnia, or poor circulation.
