Foxwoods, dealers' union reach settlement in union president's firing

Mashantucket — Foxwoods Resort Casino and the union representing the casino’s table-games dealers have settled a grievance the union filed over what it claimed was the “unjust” firing of its former president.

The sides avoided arbitration, according to a post on the website of the union, Local 2121 of the United Auto Workers. Billy Shea, the former president, chose not to seek reinstatement as a “dual rate,” a position in which a dealer serves at times in a supervisory role, the post says.

“We want everyone to know that on the eve of the scheduled arbitration, an agreement was reached in settlement of Billy's grievance,” Andrea Goodrich, the local’s current president, writes in the post. “The parties to the settlement have agreed that the specific terms will be kept confidential. But we can tell you that it was ultimately Billy's choice not to seek reinstatement and that the terms of the agreement were satisfactory to all parties.”

Shea worked at Foxwoods for 22 years, according to the post. Attempts to reach him Friday were unsuccessful.

None of the parties has discussed the reason for Shea's firing, though at the time, the union said it believed “management’s decision is unjust and violates the contract.”

“As a best practice, Foxwoods does not make public comments on internal employee relations matters,” Richard Moskowitz, Foxwoods’ executive director of labor relations, said Friday.

Shea resigned as president of the local after his firing. Goodrich, then the vice president, succeeded him.

In upcoming elections, the local, which has about 1,500 members, will choose a vice president and members of a bargaining committee that will negotiate a new contract with Foxwoods management. The current contract expires at the end of the year.
